EuroVelo 13 – The Iron Curtain Trail – connects 20 countries, 3 seas and over ten thousand kilometers of formerly closed border. A lighthouse project of this scale has a clear international appeal. By captivating the imagination of an international audience, people outside the typical cycle tourist profile may be interested.

In order to present project results and development opportunities lying in cycling tourism along the Iron Curtain Trail, the South Transdanubian Regional Development Agency has organised the international project closing conference of the Iron Curtain Trail project (SEE) on 28 November 2014, with the participation of cycling and tourism professionals, local service providers and decision makers.

The South Transdanubian Regional Development Agency – as partner of the Iron Curtain Trail project – organised a promotional cycling tour on the South Transdanubian section of the Iron Curtain Trail, between Drávasztára and Szentborbás.

Twenty five years ago the Pan-European Picnic was held to mark one of the first holes being cut in the Iron Curtain on the border between Hungary and Austria. To mark this occasion, the Hungarian Cycling Alliance and Regional Management Burgenland agreed upon an itinerary for EuroVelo 13 – Iron Curtain Trail and the route has been signed with official EuroVelo signposting in time for the anniversary on 19th August 2014

A series of events regarding the EuroVelo 13 - Iron Curtain Trail cycling route of the project “Sustainable development along the newest EuroVelo Route, the Iron Curtain Trail” (South East Europe Programme) successfully took place during the 20th Youth Meeting of Ardas 2014 that was organised by the Municipality of Orestiada -Kastanies and Ardas regions.

The Hungarian Cycling Alliance, as project partner of the Iron Curtain Trail project, would invites interested visitors to the opening ceremony of the newly signposted Austrian-Hungarian border section, and the following two-days cycling trip along the new section. The cycling trip is followed by a three-days Eurovelo-festival in Szentgotthárd, Hungary, with daily cycling trips to Austria, Slovenia and Hungary and programmes in the afternoons and evenings.

Iron Curtain Trail project events are going to take place in the region of Ardas river, in the part that has recently been inserted into the EuroVelo 13 cycling route.

Cyclists Welcome Hellas” network that is being developed as an Iron Curtain Trail project activity under work package 4 (WP4), was presented in a conference organised at the Municipality of Paionia in Polykastro of Kilkis, on June 25th 2014.
